Galaxy - Introduction
What is Galaxy?
Perhaps it should be called YAEC -- Yet Another Elite Clone. But Galaxy is easier to pronounce.
The intention is that it should reproduce most of the features of the original Elite, and then some, with the player being able to fight and trade their way around an enormous galaxy (the current version has several million solar systems. You don't believe us? Go and count them). Space stations can be docked at and then wandered round (in FPS style), and similarly planets can be landed on and explored.
At the moment the game is still in the fairly early stages of development, and only the space-flight section is operational. You can see what it looks like on the screen shots page.
When will it be available?
Watch this space. We intend to keep posting playable demos of the game as it progresses. Check on the downloads page for the latest version.
What language does it use?
The whole project is being written using Blitz3D, a version of BASIC which has been created specifically for writing 3D games (there is also a version called Blitz Basic for writing 2D games -- Blitz3D in fact combines the two, so it is possible to write 2D games in Blitz3D, as well as 3D games).
Blitz is cheap, but you can also download a trial copy to test it out before parting with your money. To learn more about Blitz, visit the official Blitz web-site.
